Every letter, digit, symbol, and space in the input is counted. Line breaks typically count as one or two characters depending on platform (LF vs CRLF).
Some platforms (academic abstracts, certain ad networks) limit characters excluding spaces. Others (Twitter/X) count all characters including spaces and punctuation.
Extended Unicode characters such as emoji may count as one or two code units depending on the platform. UTF-16 treats supplementary characters (above U+FFFF) as surrogate pairs — two 16-bit units for one visual character.
