Tools you might need next
Estimate grout needed for tile projects. Enter tile size, joint width, and coverage area to get grout weight in pounds and number of standard grout bags.
Estimate hardwood flooring for your room. Enter dimensions and plank size to get square footage, box count, and plank quantity with 10% cut waste included.
Calculate carpet square footage and linear feet from room size and roll width. Estimate seams, waste, and total carpet to order for wall-to-wall installation.
Calculate gross floor or wall area. Subtract fixed cabinets or tubs manually for net tiling area on partial walls.
Area (sq ft) = Length (ft) × Width (ft)Include grout joint in each tile module. A 12×12″ tile with 1/8″ gaps covers slightly more than 1 sq ft per tile.
Effective Area = ((Tile L + Gap)/12) × ((Tile W + Gap)/12)Divide room area by effective tile area and apply waste factor. Use 10% for straight lay, 15% for diagonal or large-format tile.
Tiles = ceil(Area ÷ Effective Tile Area × (1 + Waste%))Updated: July 2026
120 sq ft with 10% waste needs about 145 tiles. Verify bullnose and trim pieces separately for tub surround transitions.
18″ height × 16 ft run = 24 sq ft. Subway 3×6″ tiles need roughly 130 tiles with 10% waste for outlet cuts.
Diagonal layout increases waste to 15%. A 15×12 ft room needs extra tiles for triangular cuts along walls.
Estimate tile quantities for bathroom floors, kitchen backsplashes, and entryways before purchasing. Enter room dimensions, tile size, grout joint width, and waste percentage to get net and order tile counts with effective coverage per tile.
