EPEF (also called European Broiler Index or EBI) is the standard industry metric combining growth rate, mortality, and feed efficiency into one comparable number. Higher values indicate better performance. Top commercial flocks achieve EPEF 400-450+.
EPEF = (Livability% × Live_Weight_kg) / (Age_days × FCR) × 100Average Daily Gain (ADG) = final weight / age in days. Livability = (birds placed - mortality) / birds placed × 100. Feed Conversion Ratio (FCR) = total feed consumed / total live weight produced. Each component independently drives profitability.

42,000-bird house with typical Ross 308 performance.
→ EPEF = (96.5 × 2.2) / (35 × 1.55) × 100 = 391
Well-managed house achieving top-quartile metrics.
→ EPEF = (98.0 × 2.8) / (42 × 1.62) × 100 = 403
EPEF naturally increases with heavier birds grown to older ages. Only compare EPEF between flocks grown to similar target weights and market ages. Use breed-specific performance objectives as the true benchmark.
All mortality from day of placement must be included. Some growers exclude DOA (dead on arrival) birds, but industry standard EPEF includes total placement-to-harvest mortality.
Calculate the European Production Efficiency Factor (EPEF) to benchmark broiler flock performance against industry standards. EPEF integrates daily weight gain, livability, and feed conversion into a single index score used worldwide for flock comparison and grower payment programs.
